Safer Than the Sun, but the Quality Can Vary...
Airbrush tanning (or airbrushing) is very similar in theory to tube tanning cream, except that it is applied with a spray nozzle. The tanning solution (DHA) is mixed with a bronzer, and is then pressurized. DHA is really just a sugar. It has been approved by the FDA, and endorsed by the American Cancer Society.
The application of spay tan usually results in a much more even appearance than tube tanning cream. The color is evenly-distributed on the skin (if the applier is a professional), because the air compressor pushes the air out of the nozzle, collecting particles of the solution as it goes. This allows for a fine mist of the tanning solution to be applied on the desired area of skin. The more tanning solution applied via airbrushing, the darker the tan.
You really can't mimic the look of an airbrush tan, or spray tan, with a tan in a can, or tube-o-tan done at home. Done correctly, a spray tan will look very much like a traditional sun tan. Three factors go into the final results of this method though: the solution used, the quality of the airbrush gun, and the skill/experience of the salon or day spa employee.
It is advised that you ask to see examples of the salon or day spa's previous work (pictures or an actual client), because the experience and skill of the airbrush operator (applier) can vary greatly. Airbrush tanning typically lasts about 7 to 10 days. Exfoliation is recommended prior to getting airbrushed, and moisturization is recommended following the application. These help in two ways: extending the life of the tan, and keeping your skin healthier.
Spray tanning is considered to be much healthier and safer than long term exposure to the sun's harmful rays.
